Resumo | Abstract
Este projeto tem como objetivo realizar uma história intelectual do Instituto Warburg balizada pelo estudo do paganismo como um problema histórico-artístico-cultural, compreendendo o período entre a transferência da instituição para Londres, em 1933, e o final da gestão de Ernst Gombrich, em 1976. A hipótese central é a de que a construção do paganismo como campo de estudo está intrinsecamente ligada à edificação do legado de Aby Warburg, processo marcado por tensões institucionais e disputas intelectuais. Em vez de observar uma mera continuidade das ideias de Warburg, a pesquisa investiga como membros da instituição — tais como Jean Seznec, Henri Frankfort, Edgar Wind, D.P. Walker, Frances A. Yates e o próprio Gombrich — conceberam e disputaram o paganismo e, por meio dele, a relevância de suas trajetórias acadêmicas. Ao desvelar tais dinâmicas, espera-se abordar a complexidade alocada na construção do legado warburguiano, oferecendo uma nova perspectiva para a historiografia do Instituto Warburg e, concomitantemente, para a história da historiografia do século XX.
This project aims to conduct an intellectual history of the Warburg Institute centered on the study of paganism as a historical-artistic-cultural problem, covering the period between the institution's relocation to London in 1933 and the end of Ernst Gombrich's directorship in 1976. The central hypothesis is that the construction of paganism as a field of study is intrinsically linked to the building of Aby Warburg’s legacy, a process marked by institutional tensions and intellectual disputes. Rather than observing a mere continuity of Warburg's ideas, this research investigates how members of the institution — such as Jean Seznec, Henri Frankfort, Edgar Wind, D.P. Walker, Frances A. Yates, and Gombrich himself — conceived and contested paganism and, through it, the relevance of their own academic trajectories. By unveiling these dynamics, the study expects to address the complexity embedded in the construction of the Warburgian legacy, offering a new perspective for the historiography of the Warburg Institute and, concurrently, for the history of 20th-century historiography.
