PORTRAIT IN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE PAINTING

A partir da reunião de diversas anotações acumuladas por longos anos sobre a arte do retrato durante o Renascimento italiano e por meio de estudos relativos àquela época, o historiador suíço Jacob Burckhardt produziu sua obra com base na história cultural dos séculos XV e XVI. Com a saúde frágil e pouco tempo de vida, Burckhardt acreditava que era necessário fazer uma síntese com as mais importantes obras artísticas daquela época. O viajante incansável, que no passado tinha percorrido diversos museus e caminhos monumentais da Itália, explica a origem de cada obra e evidencia a relação entre a forma e a função delas. Ao mesmo tempo, destaca a complementaridade que tal ligação teve para o desenvolvimento artístico do Renascimento italiano. Assim, durante dois séculos, assistimos à grande transformação iconográ_ ca e morfológica, proporcionada pelas interpretações das obras e citações que mostravam traços fundamentais da “descoberta do homem e do mundo”. O Retrato na Pintura Italiana do Renascimento é uma coletânea de textos escritos com base em diversos registros daquela época. Impulsionado a interpretar discursos que representassem sua ligação com o mundo exterior, o autor pode narrar episódios marcantes da vida de personagens signi_ cativos de tempo. JACOB BURCKHARDT nasceu na Suíça, em 1818, e morreu em 1897. Como historiador, filósofo da história e da cultura suíça, lecionou história da arte na Universidade de Basileia e na Universidade de Zurique. Formado pela Universidade de Berlim, Burckhardt teve profunda ligação com as mais diversas fontes que remontavam à época do Renascimento italiano. Por meio da obra A Cultura do Renascimento na Itália, o historiador conseguiu formar uma síntese histórica do período, retratando a infinidade de realizações dos homens daquele país. CÁSSIO FERNANDES possui doutorado em história social pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (Unicamp). É professor adjunto do Departamento de História da Arte da Universidade Federal de São Paulo (Unifesp) e professor colaborador no Programa de Pós-graduação em História da Universidade Federal de Juiz de Fora (UFJF). É autor de diversos trabalhos sobre Jacob Burckhardt e a arte renascentista.

From the collection of several notes accumulated over many years on the art of portraiture during the Italian Renaissance and through studies related to that time, the Swiss historian Jacob Burckhardt produced his work based on the cultural history of the 15th and 16th centuries. With fragile health and little time to live, Burckhardt believed that it was necessary to make a synthesis with the most important artistic works of that time. The tireless traveller, who in the past had traveled through various museums and monumental paths in Italy, explains the origin of each work and highlights the relationship between their form and function. At the same time, it highlights the complementarity that such connection had for the artistic development of the Italian Renaissance. Thus, for two centuries, we witnessed the great iconographic and morphological transformation, provided by the interpretations of works and quotations that showed fundamental traits of the “discovery of man and the world”. The Portrait in Italian Renaissance Painting is a collection of written texts based on various records from that time. Driven to interpret discourses that represented his connection with the outside world, the author was able to narrate remarkable episodes in the lives of significant characters of time. JACOB BURCKHARDT was born in Switzerland in 1818 and died in 1897. As a historian, philosopher of Swiss history and culture, he taught art history at the University of Basel and the University of Zurich. A graduate of the University of Berlin, Burckhardt had a deep connection with the most diverse sources dating back to the Italian Renaissance. Through the work The Culture of the Renaissance in Italy, the historian managed to form a historical synthesis of the period, portraying the infinity of achievements of men in that country. CÁSSIO FERNANDES holds a doctorate in social history from the State University of Campinas (Unicamp). He is an adjunct professor at the Department of Art History at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and a collaborating professor at the Postgraduate Program in History at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (UFJF). He is the author of several works on Jacob Burckhardt and Renaissance art.
