Resumo | Abstract

A presente pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar a apresentação do Mapa do Inferno (c. 1480-1490), realizado pelo artista renascentista Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510). Na ilustração em questão, Botticelli referencia a descrição dos círculos do Inferno tal qual apresentado pelo poeta florentino Dante Alighieri (c. 1265-1321) em sua Comédia (c. 1321). Compreendendo a influência secular da Igreja Católica nas condutas morais e nos costumes das sociedades ocidentais, a análise imagética e textual das composições buscará depreender de que maneira elementos da Antiguidade Pagã retornam ao cerne do imaginário cristão dos séculos XIV e XV, a partir da ideia do Inferno disseminada por estas duas composições. Ainda, buscar-se-á apreender as relações dos dois artistas de Florença com os contextos histórico-culturais de seus períodos, considerando essencial a análise das perspectivas singulares e influências externas na construção das obras.

This research aims to analyze the presentation of the Map of Hell (c. 1480–1490), created by the Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli (1445–1510). In this illustration, Botticelli references the depiction of the circles of Hell as presented by the Florentine poet Dante Alighieri (c. 1265–1321) in his Commedia (c. 1321). Considering the secular influence of the Catholic Church on moral conduct and customs in Western societies, the visual and textual analysis of the compositions seeks to understand how elements of Pagan Antiquity reemerge at the core of the Christian imagination in the 14th and 15th centuries, through the idea of Hell conveyed in these two works. Furthermore, the study aims to grasp the relationship both Florentine artists had with the historical and cultural contexts of their respective periods, considering essential the analysis of their individual perspectives and external influences in the construction of their works.
