Resumo | Abstract
Este projeto explora a relação entre Frances Yates e o legado de Aby Warburg, com foco nos itinerários intelectuais warburguianos que permeiam sua obra mais conhecida, Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition (1964). A pesquisa investiga como Yates mobilizou as abordagens interdisciplinares de Warburg, especialmente na integração entre história da arte e antropologia. Ao examinar temas como o papel do paganismo antigo, a presença de elementos esotéricos e a tensão entre pensamento mágico e racionalismo científico no Renascimento, Yates revisita aspectos da Kulturwissenschaft sob uma nova perspectiva. O estudo busca identificar as redes conceituais e teórico-metodológicas que sustentam os argumentos de Yates, considerando tanto as dinâmicas intelectuais diretas quanto o contexto material e cultural que moldou suas ideias. Adicionalmente, explora como a inserção de Yates no círculo de Aby Warburg, particularmente no Instituto Warburg, permitiu-lhe rearticular temas centrais do legado de Warburg, como a relação entre paganismo e modernidade e o uso do símbolo como recurso interpretativo. Ao revisitar o trabalho de Yates sob a ótica das ideias de Warburg, procuramos demonstrar como sua interpretação fundamenta-se em uma reapropriação teórico-metodológica a partir de um uma continuidade temática. Simultaneamente, o legado de Warburg, visto sob uma perspectiva histórica, pode ser compreendido a partir das leituras que fizeram de sua obra. Assim, Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition é analisado com o intuito de identificar elementos que revelam a interpretação de Yates sobre o programa intelectual de Warburg, configurando seu impacto no mundo britânico dos anos 1960.
This project explores the relationship between Frances Yates and the legacy of Aby Warburg, focusing on the Warburgian intellectual itineraries that permeate her most renowned work, Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition (1964). The research investigates how Yates mobilized Warburg's interdisciplinary approaches, particularly the integration of art history and anthropology. By examining themes such as the role of ancient paganism, the presence of esoteric elements, and the tension between magical thinking and scientific rationalism in the Renaissance, Yates revisits aspects of Kulturwissenschaft from a new perspective. The study seeks to identify the conceptual and theoretical-methodological networks underpinning Yates' arguments, considering both direct intellectual dynamics and the material and cultural context that shaped her ideas. Additionally, it examines how Yates' position within Aby Warburg's circle, particularly at the Warburg Institute, enabled her to rearticulate central themes of Warburg's legacy, such as the relationship between paganism and modernity and the use of symbols as interpretative tools. By revisiting Yates' work through the lens of Warburg's ideas, the project aims to demonstrate how her interpretation is grounded in a theoretical-methodological reappropriation that maintains thematic continuity. Simultaneously, Warburg's legacy, viewed from a historical perspective, can be understood through the interpretations made of his work. Thus, Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition is analyzed to identify elements that reveal Yates' interpretation of Warburg's intellectual program, highlighting its impact on the British intellectual scene of the 1960s.
