Resumo | Abstract

Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo realizar o levantamento e interpretação iconográfica dos retratos da monarca inglesa Elizabeth I, rainha entre 1558 e 1603, período de profundas transformações sociais, religiosas e culturais. Privilegiar-se-á o estudo destas obras elaboradas e difundidas na sociedade inglesa, suas ligações entre forma e função e sua inter-relação na criação e manutenção do equilíbrio social, político e religioso no período da segunda metade do reinado de Elizabeth I, quando de sua excomunhão pelo Pala Pio V em 1570. Pretende-se utilizar seus retratos como fonte de problematização pelo seu amplo uso e da complexa iconografia existente. As Reformas religiosas na Inglaterra Tudor realizadas por Henrique VIII, Eduardo VI e a própria Elizabeth I aboliram e perseguiram o catolicismo em algumas de suas manifestações ritualísticas, representativas e artísticas mais profundas, formando uma igreja nacional, sendo o monarca chefe supremo desta instituição. Porém, existem peculiaridades nas representações de Elizabeth I que mantêm e reproduzem de modo artístico e crescente algumas destas manifestações, fornecendo ligações entre as estruturas culturais e sociais antagônicas perante o contexto pós-reforma. A ampla produção e divulgação das representações da rainha, são “uma evidência visual atraente para a consolidação do poder do Estado dinástico inglês, e para a natureza altamente personalizada do processo político do período moderno”, sendo sua realização e controle centralizado, uma diversificada e elaborada ferramenta da monarca, que acabara de unir sobre si o poder temporal e espiritual. Pretende-se realizar o levantamento e interpretação destes elementos culturais que engendram um discurso de afirmação e legitimação da rainha por meio destes retratos, que em conjunto fornecem especificidades do contexto histórico de sua produção.

This research aims to carry out a survey and iconographic interpretation of the portraits of the English monarch Elizabeth I, queen between 1558 and 1603, a period of profound social, religious and cultural transformations. Special attention will be given to the study of these works elaborated and disseminated in English society, their links between form and function and their interrelationship in the creation and maintenance of social, political and religious balance in the period of the second half of Elizabeth I's reign, when of his excommunication by Pala Pio V in 1570. It is intended to use his portraits as a source of problematization due to their wide use and the complex existing iconography. The Religious Reforms in Tudor England carried out by Henry VIII, Edward VI and Elizabeth I herself abolished and persecuted Catholicism in some of its most profound ritualistic, representative and artistic manifestations, forming a national church, being the supreme chief monarch of this institution. However, there are peculiarities in the representations of Elizabeth I that maintain and reproduce in an artistic and growing way some of these manifestations, providing links between antagonistic cultural and social structures in the post-reform context. The wide production and dissemination of the Queen's representations are “an attractive visual evidence for the consolidation of the power of the English dynastic state, and for the highly personalized nature of the political process of the modern period”, being its centralized realization and control, a diversified and an elaborate tool of the monarch, who had just united temporal and spiritual power upon him. It is intended to carry out a survey and interpretation of these cultural elements that engender a discourse of affirmation and legitimacy of the queen through these portraits, which together provide specifics of the historical context of her production.
