Resumo | Abstract
O legado de Aby Warburg (1866–1929) representa hoje umas das mais expressivas contribuições ao debate teórico-metodológico no âmbito das artes. Sua biblioteca, conservada no Warburg Institute, e sua série de estudos sobre o Renascimento e sobre o fenômeno da expressão simbólica em sua acepção antropológica e psicológica, são amplamente reconhecidos como um dos projetos mais complexos, abrangentes, apurados e audaciosos da historiografia da arte. A despeito de sua importância, por muito tempo, seu nome ficou praticamente esquecido pela academia brasileira. Nos últimos anos, porém, com a tradução de seus escritos e a publicação de estudos críticos, sua recepção em nosso meio adquiriu uma notável expressão. Nosso projeto pretende contribuir com esse movimento de recepção da obra de Warburg em nosso país, trazendo para o debate a dimensão teórico-metodológica de seu pensamento a partir do enfoque em um conjunto de textos que entendemos como desenvolvimentos estratégicos de um problema fundamental de sua obra: a criação de uma concepção antropológica ligada à imagem. Com a consecução desta proposta, pretendemos produzir estudos críticos sobre a teoria da imagem de Warburg, a serem apreciadas por revistas especializadas, e publicar uma coletânea de textos inéditos em português, precedida de uma introdução circunstanciada. Nossa convicção é a de que a ênfase nos originais, nas fontes complexas e fragmentárias do pensamento de Warburg, amplia e aprofunda nosso horizonte, oferecendo valiosos subsídios a uma comunidade acadêmica que ainda carece da tradução de parte considerável de seus escritos.
The legacy of Aby Warburg (1866–1929) represents one of the most significant contributions to the theoretical-methodological debate within the field of the arts today. His library, preserved at the Warburg Institute, along with his series of studies on the Renaissance and the phenomenon of symbolic expression in its anthropological and psychological sense, is widely recognized as one of the most complex, comprehensive, refined, and daring projects in art historiography. Despite its importance, his name remained virtually forgotten by Brazilian academia for a long time. In recent years, however, with the translation of his writings and the publication of critical studies, his reception in our field has gained notable prominence. Our project aims to contribute to this movement of reception of Warburg's work in our country by bringing to the discussion the theoretical-methodological dimension of his thought, focusing on a selection of texts we understand as strategic developments of a fundamental problem in his work: the creation of an anthropological conception connected to the image. Through this proposal, we aim to produce critical studies on Warburg's image theory for publication in specialized journals and to publish a collection of previously untranslated texts in Portuguese, prefaced by a comprehensive introduction. Our conviction is that an emphasis on the originals, on the complex and fragmentary sources of Warburg’s thought, broadens and deepens our horizon, providing valuable insights for an academic community still in need of translations of a considerable portion of his writings.
