Resumo | Abstract

Este projeto investiga a iconografia da mulher mameluca no século XVII, durante a ocupação holandesa no Nordeste do Brasil, analisando obras de Albert Eckhout (ca. 1607–ca. 1666) e Zacharias Wagener (1614–1668). A pesquisa aborda as tensões culturais, hibridismos e apagamentos nas representações da mulher indígena e suas conexões com identidades mestiças, destacando trocas entre Europa, Ásia Ocidental, África e América. Também examina influências mouras e africanas na iconografia colonial, dialogando com Gilberto Freyre sobre o sincretismo cultural. Ancorado no modo científico-cultural de análise de imagens de Aby Warburg, o estudo revela ambiguidades das representações visuais e as interseções entre arte e ciência no contexto transatlântico.

This project investigates the iconography of the Mamluk woman in the 17th century during the Dutch occupation of Northeast Brazil, analyzing the works of Albert Eckhout (ca. 1607–ca. 1666) and Zacharias Wagener (1614–1668). The research explores cultural tensions, hybridisms, and erasures in representations of Indigenous women and their connections to mestizo identities, highlighting exchanges between Europe, Western Asia, Africa, and the Americas. It also examines Moorish and African influences in colonial iconography, engaging with Gilberto Freyre’s reflections on cultural syncretism. Anchored in Aby Warburg’s scientific-cultural method of image analysis, the study reveals the ambiguities of visual representations and the intersections between art and science in the transatlantic context.
